FBR extends the income tax return deadline for Tax Year 2026 to 15 October
The Federal Board of Revenue has extended the last date for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 from 30 September to 15 October 2026.
The extension was issued on 30 September 2026 as Circular No. 3 of 2026-27 (Income Tax), under the powers conferred by Section 214A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. It applies to persons who were required to file their returns by 30 September 2026, and the Board records the reason as requests received from various trade bodies and tax bar associations.
The confusion earlier that day
If you saw contradictory reports on 30 September, you were not imagining it. A notification claiming an extension circulated during the day and the FBR publicly described it as fake. The genuine extension followed hours later.
The ordinary lesson applies: a screenshot forwarded on WhatsApp is a rumour until the circular itself appears. This one is verifiable — Circular No. 3 of 2026-27, signed by the Second Secretary (IR-Operations) and dated 30 September 2026.
What it covers, and what it does not
This extension moves one date: the income tax return for Tax Year 2026.
It does not move sales tax or federal excise return dates, which run on their own cycle and were the subject of separate extensions earlier in September. It does not change any digital invoicing integration timeline. If you are tracking more than one deadline, treat them separately — they are issued under different provisions and they move independently.
And it is only about timing. The substantive Finance Act 2026 changes — the new salary slabs, the end of section 7E, the integration provisions — are explained separately in FBR’s Circular No. 02 of 2026-27; our record of all thirty amendments walks through them one by one.
What to do with the extra fifteen days
An extension is time to file properly, not permission to file later. The useful work is the same work it always was:
- Reconcile your withholding statements against what actually appears in IRIS
- Confirm that tax already deducted at source is credited to you, not sitting unmatched
- Check that the wealth statement agrees with the return, where one is required
Returns filed in the closing hours are where errors get made, and an error invites a notice that will outlast this deadline by months. Filing on time also keeps you on the Active Taxpayer List, which for most businesses is the practical reason the date matters at all.
If your books are not ready
Fifteen days is enough to fix more than people assume. If your records are not in a state where a return can be filed accurately, send us what you have and a practitioner will tell you plainly what is missing.
